Membership in the MAS will bring you in contact with other people working with similar instrumentation on similar projects. These contacts can be invaluable. The Society promotes the interactions in a variety of ways.
Annual Meetings
Each year the Society sponsors or co-sponsors (with MSA) an annual meeting. These meetings bring together the best individuals from all disciplines related to microbeam analysis. Invited and contributed papers summarize the latest work in the field. All papers are published as extended abstracts in a separate MAS conference proceedings. The annual meetings foster the personal contacts, friendships, and learning experiences which are important throughout one's career. In addition to the large national meetings, the Society sponsors Topical Conferences that focus on specific areas that are of interest sections of our membership. In some cases MAS also joins with international microanalysis societies for microanalysis only type meetings. These separate meetings focus on topics of direct interest to our members and often contain symposia on special subjects or new techniques.
Professional Recognition
Members are recognized for outstanding achievement in several ways. Each year awards are presented for the outstanding papers presented in several catagories. These awards are funded by the Society and through the generosity of several sustaining corporate members. In addition, the Society awards Honorary and Emeritus membership and Distinguished Service Awards to outstanding contributors to the field or the Society.
National Tour Speaker Program
The Society currently has affiliations with local groups interested in microbeam analysis in all regions of the United States and Canada. As a service to these groups, the Society supports a tour speaker program that brings distinguished scientists to the local meetings to speak about microbeam techniques. Speakers and topical suggestions are selected from requests of the local affiliates at the annual meeting.
Microscopy & Microanalysis
The Society is sponsors a scholarly journal in collaboration with the Microscopy Society of America. The Microbeam Analysis Society Journal, which was launched in 1992, was dedicated to microanalysis. In 1995 it was merged with the new Journal of The Microscopy Society of America. Following some problems with the original publisher, the journal of the two societies is now published by Cambridge University Press. The Journal provides members a unique forum to publish papers that address the interests of the Society and the field. The Editor-in-Chief of the journal is currently Charlie Lyman and inquiries concerning the publication should be directed to him. MAS members do not automatically receive a subscription as part of their annual Society dues. The subscription is an extra charge. For further subscription information, contact the member services coordinator Lou Ross.
Society Newsletter
The Society also publishes a newsletter (MicroNews) for all of its members. MicroNews contains a multitude of information including: Society information, annual meeting news, local affiliate Society news, bibliography, membership list, meeting calendar, AV and MMS library information, lists of educational courses, job opportunities, lists of sustaining members and local affiliates, and articles of interest to people in the microbeam analysis field. The newsletter is available on-line.
Regular and Student Membership.

The fee for sustaining membership includes a number of additional benefits. Only Sustaining Members are allowed to exhibit at annual meetings sponsored solely by MAS.
