Symposium - Microbeams Here, There and Everywhere.
Paul Carpenter has arranged a fiesta welcoming mixer as well as the main event at Knott's Berry Farm Amusement Park. Our Local Arrangements Committee continues to do an outstanding job preparing to provide all of us with a very memorable scientific and social experience.
We believe that this should be an excellent opportunity to expose our young scientists to our society and its members. We would hope that they will be encouraged by you, our older members, to attend and to present their work.
And now a word to our sustaining members. The MAS only meeting is a super opportunity for us to get to know you better and for you to become much more involved with the scientific aspect of our society. This year's Presidential Symposium is slanted more in your direction for obvious reasons. As Sustaining Members, you are the backbone of our society and we welcome this opportunity to have your added participation and to have you more involved in our scientific program.
We hope that by this time our membership has received at least three journals and that you are quite satisfied that the journal justified our 1993 dues increase. As I write this article, I am preparing to depart for the Winter Council Meeting and will share details of that meeting in the next journal of Microbeam Analysis.
Finally, just a note to thank so many of you for your encouragement and for your ideas to improve our society. Your thoughts are always welcome and encouraged.

PRESIDENT'S MESSAGE
Dear Colleagues:
I am pleased to announce to you the results of our election for new officers of our MAS Society:
President Elect - John Small Director - Joanna Batstone Director - Charlie Lyman
John Small has served our council, as David Williams put it, as "Chronicler of Council's Ramblings", as well as our very successful Program Chair for the outstanding 1992 Boston meeting. I am further comforted to know that John will follow me to clean up my rather non-scientific microbeams and to put our house back in its usual good scientific order. As a 1992 Tour Speaker, Joanna made numerous presentations to many affiliate organizations which should help her better represent our membership during her term as Director. I could say so much about Charlie so I'll start by saying that as a longtime member of MSA, and more recently as the Past-President of MSA, Charlie has had exposure and experiences to which most of us still look ahead. He will become an instant sounding board for numerous ideas and a reference for others within our society. Our society is deeply indebted to Meredith Bond at the Cleveland Clinic, to Mary Grace Burke at Westinghouse, to Joe Geller at Geller Analytical, and to Dave Kruger at IBM Fishkill for their willingness to run for office. We are very hopeful that we will be able to utilize their talents and energies in our society in the near future. Lastly, let me thank Mary Finn of MIT Lincoln Labs and Charles Nielsen, one of my longtime colleagues, for serving as tellers for the election.
Jack Worrall, Chair of our Local Arrangements Committee in Los Angeles, has been hard at work with his committee arranging our annual meeting for this July 11-16, 1993 at Loyola Marymount University in Los Angeles. This is an ideal setting for a MAS only meeting as it is located very close to the beach, Marina Del Rey and will be completely dedicated to our MAS Symposium. Our program chairs, John Armstrong and John Porter, are preparing to present us with, as they have announced, "a diverse program" which I am sure is an understatement. There will be tutorial workshops on Sunday, the traditional MAS/AEM Joint Session on X-ray Spectrometry chaired by Dave Williams and Al Romig, the Chuck Fiori Memorial Symposium, not to mention the Presidential

27th MEETING OF THE MICROBEAM ANALYSIS SOCIETY
Loyola Marymount University Marina del Rey / Los Angeles, California July 11-16, 1993
MAS 1993 Socials and Special Sessions
The date for our national meeting is rapidly approaching. As you can imagine, our Local Arrangements Committee is getting more excited by the minute (or is that nervous). We certainly hope that you can come and join us this year. If you haven't already pre-registered, the following is a brief description of the social events and special sessions that will be presented. Please come and enjoy what should be a relaxing and informative meeting at Loyola Marymount University this summer. If you have not received your pre-registration material, please call (213) 740-1990 and one will be sent out immediately.
The social events are designed for attendance by the whole family. Our welcoming reception on Sunday will include a variety of Mexican foods, margaritas and soft drinks. Entertainment will be provided on one of the cool open air patios by INCA, a Peruvian folk ensemble of musicians, vocalists and dancers. Colorful costumes and exotic and rare instruments are part of the excitement of INCA who bring to life the traditional and ancient musical forms from Peru. The Monday evening exhibitors mixer will be poolside at the Red Lion Hotel where we will be treated to a dessert buffet with French pastries and after-dinner drinks. Our main event on Wednesday should be relaxing and fun for everyone. We will spend the afternoon and evening at Knott's Berry Farm, a historical agricultural center of the Los Angeles Basin (and home of SNOOPY).
|
In addition to making some of the best fruit preserves and jams, Knott's has a huge theme park that is full of fun things to do ranging from a petting zoo to Montezuma's Revenge. Following an afternoon of rides and shows, we will have an evening all-you-can-eat dinner in our own reserved park. The Knott's staff will organize various games including baseball, volleyball, and even horseshoes! After dinner we can go back to Knott's theme park or stay in the picnic area. Comfortable buses will provide transportation to and from the park. All of the above events are included in the registration fee (don't ask me how we did it).
The program has some equally exciting events to offer this year. A very special symposium honoring Chuck Fiori will include a MAS/AEM Joint Session on X-ray Spectrometry in Electron Beam Instruments. The organizers plan to produce a text from the presentations in this symposium to replace the NBS publication on EDS. Sessions will include presentations on both the hardware and software of x-ray analysis. Our current president, Tom Huber, has chosen to draw on the creative talents of past MAS presidents for the Presidential Symposium (he must have taken the title literally) on "Microbeams: Here, There, and Everywhere". It should be an interesting look at what these "beams" we generate are up to and where they are going. The AEM Workshop on Quantitative Aspects of AEM/STEM will present the latest on the unique capabilities of this segment of microanalysis. This workshop has historically demonstrated what the limits of this field are, and has occasionally gone beyond them.
The Local Arrangements Committee is looking forward to seeing you and your family in Southern California this July. Surf's up!

IS MAS MAIL REACHING YOUR MAS FRIENDS?
Some of our members did not receive the first issue of the journal and/or the special mailing (dues statement, ballot, call for papers and brochure about MAS 1993) which were sent bulk rate. Ask your MAS friends whether they received these mailings as some businesses do not (expediently) deliver bulk mail. Please encourage the non-recipients to use their home address for MAS mailings.
