executive council will be addressing several long-range issues. These issues include the formation of an MAS business office and our future relationship with our sister society MSA, as they make plans to launch a new journal.

John A. Small, President

PRESIDENT'S MESSAGE

Dear Members,

It is not often that an organization is fortunate enough to be able to draw on the talents of a volunteer worker for more than a few years let alone 29 years. I would like to take this opportunity, as MAS president, to thank Art Chodos for all the work he has done for MAS over the past three decades. Art is stepping down as chair of three committees, membership services, publicity, and sustaining members. As Art so aptly put it, you could not pay him enough money to do the job. It was a labor of his love for MAS. In addition to the above committees, Art has also served MAS over the years as treasurer, president, and chair of various other committees too numerous to mention, and continues to serve as our historian. His dedication and loyalty to MAS is second to none. I was considering Art for a service award but he has already received two. Since there are no awards left to offer Art, I would just like to thank him on behalf of all members for his dedication and love for MAS.

I would also like to thank our two outgoing directors, John Porter and Phil Russell. During their three years on council, both have done an outstanding job serving the society not only as directors but in many different ways.

During the months since the summer meeting, the LAC and program chairs for New Orleans 1994 have been hard at work with the MSA representatives to finish the final arrangements for what is shaping up to be an outstanding meeting. For the first and hopefully the last time, the 1994 New Orleans meeting will have proceedings published by two different publishers at two different prices. The MAS proceedings will be offered as a special issue of the Microbeam Analysis Journal and issued by VCH and the MSA proceedings will be in book form and handled as in the past by San Francisco Press. To keep the registration fee the same for both societies, current MAS members that register for the meeting and check the MAS registrant box on the registration form will receive the special journal issue and their 1995 membership dues as part of their registration. MAS members who wish to receive the MSA proceedings may elect to do so for an additional charge.

In closing, as I look back over the past few months as president I would like to thank everyone for their generous support. I have found the job both challenging and rewarding. Looking ahead, as we prepare to begin a new year, the

The 1994 meeting of the Microscopy Society of America and the Microbeam Analysis Society will be held in New Orleans from July 31st through August 5th. The scientific program and corporate exhibits show will take place in the Ernest N. Morial Convention Center located at the foot of Canal Street in the "hub" of activity in downtown New Orleans. The Sunday Opening Reception will be held July 31st at the Aquarium of the Americas which is adjacent to Woldenberg Park, a beautiful green space overlooking the Mississippi River. The evening will include leisure tours of the aquarium, spicy New Orleans food, and great jazz music. The Exhibitor's Mixer will take place on Wednesday afternoon, August 3rd, in the exhibit hall of the convention center. A riverboat excursion with hors d'oeuvres or dinner buffet is being considered for the

THANK YOU

We, Chuck Fiori's family, wish to express our gratitude to all of Chuck's good friends, you who have kept us in your hearts and prayers this most difficult first year. Your thoughtful indications of the significance Chuck had for your individual lives have been most meaningful to us. We were especially appreciative of the MAS decision to establish the Chuck Fiori Memorial Scholarship Fund, and are pleased indeed that the fund will be permanently in place to assist MAS Tour Speakers and technical training workshops. We wish to thank those of you who have already contributed, and those who wish to contribute in the future. We are grateful for your attempt to in some way compensate us for our great loss; your kind gifts to commemorate Chuck's fun-loving spirit and his great enthusiasm for his field are greatly appreciated. Chuck would be amazed at the tremendous outpouring of love and affection we have received in his honor. We are most grateful to you all. Gini, Peter, and Alice

MAS social function. The Annual Golf Tournament will take place at the Audubon Golf Course located in uptown New Orleans, immediately across the street from Tulane University. Many possibilities exist for specialized tours including plantation trips, bayou and swamp boat cruises, Cajun cooking and dancing classes, jazz breakfasts at French Quarter courtyard restaurants, zoo cruises via riverboat, and dinner/jazz cruises. In addition, riverboat gambling boats will probably be operating and docking at the foot of Canal Street.

Call and Instruction for Papers

In December, all MAS and MSA members should receive a Registration Bulletin / Call for Papers for the 1994 MAS/MSA Meeting in New Orleans. If you would like this information and you are not a MAS or MSA member, or if you have not received this information by the end of December, please contact the office below. The deadline for abstracts is March 15, 1994.

While this is a large list of potential "microscopy" fields it is anticipated that usage will dictate expansion/spin-off of subscriptions to parallel discussion/distribution lists, with subsets derived from the input of the users or its' demise due to lack of interest. Thus, the purpose of this announcement of the microscopy listserver is to provide an initial impetus and forum for discussion of problems which can benefit the presentation/discussion by the microscopy community as a whole.

There are no charges to become a member of the subscription list nor are there any charges for usage, except for the request that you actively participate in any discussion to which you have a question, comment and/or contribution.

To register with the system

1.) Send an Email message to "LISTSERVER@ANLEMC.MSD.ANL.GOV". Within the body of the Email message include the following line:

"Subscribe Microscopy UserName@EMailaddress"

where "EMailaddress" is the electronic mail address of your host computer, and "UserName" is the username by which you are registered on that system.

2.) Within a day or so you will receive a confirmation test message which tests the address that you have supplied to the Microscopy Server. Upon receipt of a reply from the subscriber (i.e. UserName@EMailaddress) to this test message your name will be added to the mailing list. You will then automatically receive copies of "ALL" Email sent to this system.

3.) Anyone may post messages to this list, however, only subscribers will receive copies. One may post messages/comments to this list using any conventional Email system by sending a message to:

"Microscopy@ANLEMC.MSD.ANL.GOV"

4.) To remove your UserName from the list send an Email message to LISTSERVER@ANLEMC.MSD.ANL.GOV containing the line:

This issue's article focuses solely on a new electronic mailing list. Nestor Zaluzec of Argonne National Laboratory has, in collaboration with John Chandler of Colorado State University and John Mansfield of The University of Michigan, initiated this new system for the exchange of microscopy based information with input form. The announcement by Nestor is included below.

ANNOUNCEMENT:

Microscopy Listserver/Mailreflector

Dear Colleagues:

With this EMail message we announce the startup of a Microscopy Listserver/Mailreflector System. The purpose of this system is to allow the scientific community a centralized Internet address to which questions/comments/answers in the various fields of Microscopy can be rapidly distributed to a list of interested individuals.

For the purposes of this discussion forum, Microscopy should be considered to include all techniques which employ a probe such as: photons (including x-rays), electrons, ions, mechanical and/or electromagnetic radiation to form a representation or characterization of the microstructure (internal or external) of any material in either physical and/or life sciences applications.

Some of the more common techniques which are associated with this field include the following: optical microscopy, x-ray microscopy, scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy, atomic force microscopy, scanning tunneling microscopy, scanning ion mi

Preparation Methods for Particle Analysis: Picking Particle Preparation Procedures to Prevent Painful Problems

Short abstracts and biographies for the three speakers were mailed to the local affiliate societies in September and were published in the September/October issue of MicroNews. I would appreciate the various program chairs presenting this information to their societies and getting back to me as soon as they have decided upon a speaker and/or an approximate to definite date. I will try to arrange schedules so that the tour speaker program doesn't bankrupt the society. When enough of the societies have responded for me to schedule some tentative tour swings, I will chase after some of the laggard societies and twist some arms. I also want to add that we are always open to suggestions for future tour speaker authors and topics and even to alternate speakers in lieu of our list. If we think we can accommodate you, we will try. If you have any questions, do not hesitate to contact me.

Sincerely,

Paul F. Hlava, MAS Tour Speaker Coordinator

LOCAL AFFILIATES

ASEMMA had a very successful annual meeting March 11 and 12, 1993 (ASEMMA-93). Approximately 50 people attended the Biological Session on Thursday and 25 attended the Materials Session on Friday. Among the featured papers was one by MAS Tour Speaker John Friel. At the meeting, Dave Bentley and Beth Huey, both from the EM facility at the University of Arizona, became ASEMMA president and treasurers, respectively.

NOMINATIONS INVITED

An IFSEM-MSA-MAS Travel Fund, which derived from the XII International EM Congress in Seattle in 1990, will provide partial support for 10-15 young US and Canadian microscopists (academic: senior graduate students, post-docs, junior faculty or staff or non-academic: scientists in government or industrial laboratories) who wish to attend the 13th ICEM in Paris in July of 1994. Senior colleagues are invited to send nominations to Dr. Dale Johnson, Chair of the Travel Fund Committee. Nominees will be sent information and instructions. Awards will be paid at the congress and will be contingent on the acceptance of an abstract submitted for the 13th ICEM and subsequent presentation of a platform or poster paper at the Congress.

THE MAS TOUR SPEAKER PROGRAM FOR 1993-1994

As everyone should know, MAS sponsors a yearly visit by a nationally recognized expert in some facet of microbeam analysis to each of the affiliated societies. These Tour Speakers give a presentation on their special field of research at the affiliated society's home and at a mutually agreed time and date: MAS pays the expenses. During the Affiliated Societies Committee meeting of Tuesday, July 13, 1993 (at Loyola Marymount University in Los Angeles, during the MAS Conference) three people were selected as candidate Tour Speakers for MAS this year. These people, their affiliations, and their topics are:
