PRESIDENT'S MESSAGE
Dear Members,
On behalf of the Microbeam Analysis Society, it is my pleasure to invite you to attend our 29th annual meeting in New Orleans. Our meeting this year, which is joint with the 52nd meeting of the Microscopy Society of America, promises to be an exciting meeting combining the latest in scientific information with the charm of the old South. The local arrangements committee has planned several social events throughout the week so that attendees will have the opportunity to interact informally and to enjoy the many treasures that New Orleans offers.
For MAS, this meeting will mark our second trip to New Orleans, the first being in 1973. At that time, we were known as the Electron Probe Analysis Society of America. However, even at this early date, it was evident that the society was expanding into other areas of microanalysis with two sessions of the 1973 meeting dedicated to the "new" technique of ion microprobe analysis. Over the past 21 years, our society has continued to expand, and the technical program being assembled for 1994 is a reflection of the multitude of microanalytical techniques that are being used to solve today's problems. The program committee has planned nearly thirty MAS and Joint sessions that cover the entire range of microanalytical techniques. As always, several of these sessions will be dedicated to tutorials and applications of the different techniques to the analysis of natural as well as anthropogenic systems. In addition to the technical program, our Sustaining Members will be part of a large contingent of manufacturers displaying the latest in hardware and software at what is one of the world's largest shows of microanalytical equipment.
Please plan to come to New Orleans. We promise you a week of scientific excellence and the opportunity to meet with many of the world leaders in microscopy and microanalysis.
John A. Small President |

New Orleans, immediately across the street from Tulane University. Many possibilities exist for specialized tours including plantation trips, bayou and swamp boat cruises, Cajun cooking and dancing classes, jazz breakfasts at French Quarter courtyard restaurants, zoo cruises via riverboat, and dinner/jazz cruises. In addition, riverboat gambling boats will probably be operating and docking at the foot of Canal Street.
MSA/MAS Cruise Social
A MSA/MAS Cruise Social, sponsored by MAS, is planned for Wednesday evening, August 3rd, from 7:00 to 9:30 p.m at the cost of $45 per person. The sultry sound of Dixieland Jazz will set the tempo of the evening as guests board the JOHN JAMES AUDUBON for a 2-hour evening cruise on the Mighty Mississippi. We have the entire boat! Guests are welcomed to enjoy the festive lights along the River, while enjoying the local cuisine.
Cajun Food Festival
Crawfish Etouffee Creole Jambalaya Chicken Sauce Piquant Shrimp Pasta Hot French Bread & Butter Bread Pudding with Steamboat Sauce French Market Coffee, Iced Tea Cash Bar
Guests can dance the night away or relax under the stars on the outer decks and enjoy the sights and sounds of New Orleans harbor at twilight.
A Mississippi Riverboat, Cajun cuisine and New Orleans music...a true Louisiana festival. Please join us!
Call and Instruction for Papers
In December, all MAS and MSA members should have received a Registration Bulletin / Call for Papers for the 1994 MAS/MSA Meeting in New Orleans. If you would like this information and you are not a MAS or MSA member, or if you have not received this information, please contact the office below. The deadline for abstracts is March 15, 1994.

Descriptions of MAS Sessions
1. Quantitative Microanalysis This session will cover the latest in microanalytical techniques. Precision and accuracy of quantitative methods will be examined.
2. Optical Microanalysis The general topic of photon-beam microanalysis has been divided into three topical groups: infrared and Raman microspectroscopy of organic materials, scanning infra |
red microprobe analysis of biological materials, and infrared and Raman microprobe analysis of minerals and inorganic materials.
3. Environmental SEM This session will cover the latest developments in microscopy and microanalysis in the environmental SEM.
4. Microbeam Mass Spectrometry Papers are solicited on all aspects of microbeam mass spectrometry, with special emphasis on investigating real world problems. Applications from a variety of techniques are desirable and might address applications in microelectronics, polymers, ceramics, and glass.
5. Quality Assurance of Microanalytical Methods Quality has become a buzz word of the '90s. Issues dealing with setting up quality systems in analytical and research labs will be discussed. International quality standards (ISO 9000, ISO 25), successful approaches, repercussions, and problems will be considered.
6. Cathode Technology Today and Tomorrow The performance of the cathode is arguably the principal determinant in the performance of any electron optical instrument. Traditional thermionic sources have served well and are still being improved. Recently, high-brightness field-emission sources, both cold and thermally assisted have fundamentally altered the performance for high-resolution low-voltage electron microscopy. This session will address these as well as new highly miniaturized field sources examining the current status and future development of cathode technology. In the session, the technologies will be compared on physical principles, performance, expense, reliability, etc.
7. Micro XRF / XRD This session will cover the latest developments in diffraction and fluorescence using small X-ray beams. Both laboratory and synchrotron-based instruments will be covered.
8. Instrumentation This session will show the latest developments in instruments for microanalysis.
9. Materials Applications Applications of microanalytical techniques to metals, semiconductors, and ceramics are all welcome.
10. Geological Applications This session will review current applications of X-ray microanalysis in geology. It will address both industrial and academic applications. |
|||
11. Biological Applications The theme of this session will be "novel analytical approaches to the measurement of Ca2+ distribution and redistribution within cells and tissues". It will feature invited speakers on this topic and contributed papers on all aspects of biological microanalysis.
12. X-ray and Image Analysis in the Petroleum Industry This session will cover current uses of X-ray microanalysis and image analysis within the petroleum industry. Topics may include catalysts, wear metals and mechanism, polymers, etc.
13. Microanalysis of Coatings and Interfaces This session will be a forum for those using microanalytical techniques to study coated materials. |
