analyzer. Also, Kurt Heinrich published the first description and results of putting the first EDS detector on an electron column in 1968. So, this is an excellent opportunity to have a discussion of 50 years of EPMA and 30 years of EDS. I encourage anyone interested in helping with the programming for this topical conference to contact me. As you have probably noticed, the first issue of Microscopy and Microanalysis has been published. I would like to congratulate the Editor-in-Chief, Dale Johnson, and his editorial board on an excellent first issue. I ask that MAS members consider this journal for your next paper on microanalysis. MAS would like to see this journal grow and become THE journal for microanalysis. I hope to see all of you in Cleveland. MAS will again sponsor a reception for our members. So come to Cleveland and stop by the MAS booth to say "hi"!

Dear Members,
I hope that all of you are planning to attend Microscopy and Microanalysis '97 in Cleveland. I think the program that has been developed by the program committee is outstanding and should really be of interest to MAS members. On behalf of MAS, I would like to thank Jon McCarthy for serving as the MAS Program co-chair. The local arrangements committee has also done an outstanding job planning this meeting. The opening reception at the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame should be a memorable event. Please try and make your room reservations for the meeting soon. The room blocks at the various hotels are filling up quickly. I would like to congratulate our newly elected officers of MAS. Our two new Directors are Don Parker and Cathy Johnson. Don is at Monsanto in St Louis and is a charter member of EPASA (Electron Probe Analysis Society of America). Cathy Johnson is at Gates Rubber Company in Denver and has also agreed to be the MAS sustaining members chair. I would also like to congratulate Ryna Marinenko as MAS President-elect. Ryna also edits and publishes MicroNews for MAS. Harvey Freeman has again been re-elected Treasurer of MAS. Harvey has done a fine job in the past and I'm sure that this will continue into the future. It is comforting to know that the Society's future is in such good hands. For many years now we have operated under the corporate name of the Microbeam Analysis Society. Harvey Freeman and Bill Thompson, our accountant, found that the society had never officially changed the name from EPASA on our certificate of incorporation. Harvey and Bill spent a lot of time to officially get the society's name changed to the Microbeam Analysis Society. They certainly deserve our thanks for taking care of this issue. At our Winter Council Meeting it was decided that MAS would hold a Topical Conference in Atlanta immediately preceding Microscopy and Microanalysis '98. It is important for MAS to commemorate the 1948 publication of Caistang's dissertation describing the electron probe micro- |

EDITOR'S NOTE |
|||||||||||
The MicroNews printer apologizes for the error in the last issue where one page of the sustaining members list was printed twice while the first page of the Affiliated Regional Societies list was left out. This mistake will be avoided in the future. Also, the last issue did not appear on the WWW until March 1997; another apology. Publication of MicroNews on the web requires some volunteer work at the U. of Michigan. We will do our best in the future to see that it appears there in a more timely fashion. Feel free to send me contributions and ideas for MicroNews. I have tried to include those meetings and short courses which would be of interest to MAS members. If I have left any out that are important to you, let me know. I'd be glad to add them to the list.

NOMINATIONS |

The new year is well upon us and many have still not renewed their membership yet. Do not wait any longer, find your renewal and send it in today. If you can't find it just fill out the membership form in this issue of MicroNews. Thank you to all who have renewed and please remind your friends and colleagues to renew as well since some of them probably have not. Let me take this opportunity to remind all members to send us their address changes to: Microbeam Analysis, PO Box 502, Fairport NY 14450. This is very important since we mail everything to our members, if we do not have your new address we will loose track of you. I want to remind you that according to our by-laws, members are removed from the rolls after one year of non-payment. Council would like to change this to six months at the next business meeting. As most of you have already noticed on your renewals, we have a joint journal with MSA called Microscopy and Microanalysis. We are all encouraged to submit articles to the journal for publication.
Information on membership can be found on the www at : <http://www.microbeamanalysis.org/mas/masmi/masmi.html>, email: scott.wight@nist.gov, or phone 800-4MASMEM.
Proceedings The proceedings of the Microscopy and Microanalysis 96 meeting (ISSN0424-8201) were published by: San Francisco Press Inc. Box 426800 San Francisco CA 94142-6800 Please direct any inquiries to the publisher.

As President Elect, I am chairman of the MAS nominations committee which also includes the two newest directors, Cathy Johnson, and Don Parker. According to the MAS by-laws, two additional members who are not members of the MAS Council are to serve on this committee. I have selected Paul Hlava because of his familiarity with the local affiliates. A second person is yet to be selected. Nominations this year will include President, Secretary, and four council members (two to be elected). If you have any suggestions of persons you feel have contributed significantly to MAS, either on the national or local level, and who would support MAS in any of these positions, please let me know as soon as possible so he/she can be considered as a nominee. The final list of nominees will be presented at the Microscopy and Microanalysis Meeting in Cleveland, Ohio in August. An issue that arose this past year was whether the nominations for officers should include more that one nominee. For many years only one nominee has been proposed by the nominations committee for president, secretary, and treasurer which is in accord with the MAS bylaws. As our society has matured, some members feel that there should be two nominees to give members a choice. On the other hand, other members have said that they don't want to have losers in these elections when both nominees are qualified for the job. If you have a particular opinion, please let committee members know soon.

TOUR SPEAKER PROGRAM '97 |
|||||
Dale Newbury has had to drop out of the Tour Speaker program for the spring but he says he'll be able to do some tours in the fall. Similarly, Mike Kersker is fully booked for the spring but he also will do more tours in the fall. If you are interested in either of these gentlemen, contact me soon so we can work on arranging cost effective tour swings through the country. Inga Musselman still has a fairly open schedule, so far. If you are interested in having her talk to your group, we would appreciate 6 to 8 weeks notice so we can work it in. I encourage every one to "meet" the tour speakers and read their biographies and abstracts on the web at http://www.microbeamanalysis.org/mas/masts/masts.html. I do expect that each affiliated society that wishes a tour speaker to visit contacts me through their official tour speaker contact person so I can try to arrange the tours to the best advantage. Talking about contacts reminded me that everyone |

should check out the contact list for the Affiliated Regional Societies at http://www.microbeamanalysis.org/mas/masas/masas.html. If your society has had a change of officers and the contact person has changed, get the appropriate information to me and I'll get it to the webmaster. The Microanalysis Society of Southern California (MASSC) has recently combined with the local SEM society to form a new society called the Southern California Society for Microscopy and Microanalysis (SCSM&M). Jack Worral is the new president and contact and he told me that they call themselves the M&M's for short (some are plain and others are peanut - his quote, not mine). The MAS council accepted the new society as an Affiliated Regional Society at the winter meeting. I want to remind the officers of the various affiliated societies that they are expected to provide MAS Council (through me) with certain documents before the month of May. Please refer to http://www.microbeamanalysis.org/mas/masas/guidelines.html. Societies that send me their newsletters have complied by that vehicle. Four societies had Tour Speaker visits this past fall and four more visits are currently scheduled for the spring.

Microscopy and Microanalysis 1997 Program Summary |
||||||
As your MAS representative on the Program Committee for M & M 1997, I wish to invite you to take part in our meeting this summer! In addition to what promises to be interesting venue for this year's meeting, I feel that the program committee has done an excellent job, and you will find many familiar MAS style topics in the symposia and general sessions. We have listed the major symposia and session titles, along with the session organizers in this issue of MicroNews. A more complete listing of the program will be available after the program planning meeting in mid-April. Continuing the new formats begun in 1995, we have made a special effort to coordinate the symposia topics with short courses, workshops and tutorials. For example, the symposium chaired by Joe Michael on Microdiffraction Methods in SEM is proceeded by a tutorial session on backscattered electron patterns. The same is true for the ESEM symposium. Other special sessions include an extraordinary joint MSA/MAS Presidential Events session, and an interactive "ask the experts" session where you can discuss some of those tough problems you have encountered in microscopy and microanalysis. I am confident that there is something in this years program of special interest to all of our membership. I want to take a few lines to highlight some aspects of the program of special interest to MAS members. Our normal session on quantitative analysis has been expanded to include x-ray excitation, and Greg Meeker has planned a companion session "Martian Life? The Role of Microanalysis" that you will not want to miss! Dale Newbury has taken on the challenge of looking at the limits of our techniques in the Microscopy and Microanalysis "Showstoppers" in Critical Applications Areas symposium, while The Limits of Image Resolution: Seeing is believing symposium will tell us if we can still hope to see what it is we are analyzing! All of this is in addition to sessions on analytical microscopy, scanning probe microscopy, optical microanalysis and low voltage microscopy and analysis to name a few more sessions. Let me leave you with some interesting facts about the program: -237 invited talks in 32 symposia -42 invited speakers from outside the US -Joint Presidential symposium -16 symposia chaired or co-chaired by MAS members Please plan to join us in Cleveland, August 10-14; you will not be disappointed!
