PRESIDENT'S MESSAGE

state that membership can be terminated for = non-payment=20 of dues for one year. Due to the increased costs of mailing = MicroNews and=20 the costs incurred for the Microscopy and Microanalysis Journal, = council=20 would like to decrease the grace period to 6 months.=20

At our winter council meeting John Mansfield = was=20 authorized to start a listserver that would focus on problems and=20 discussions related to electron probe microanalysis. John has now = had the=20 probe listserver up and running, so when you see him please thank = him for=20 a job well done.=20

Please feel free to contact me with any = concerns as I am=20 always happy to hear from MAS members. I hope to see all of you in = Cleveland!!=20

Joe Michael

Fellow MAS Members,=20

I hope that all of you have made your plans to = attend=20 Microscopy and Microanalysis '97 in Cleveland. The program that = has been=20 developed by the program committee is outstanding and should = provide=20 something of interest to all MAS members. So please plan to = attend. For=20 more information I refer you to Jon McCarthy's note elsewhere in = this=20 issue of Micro News. I would like to bring one event in particular = to your=20 attention. MAS will again sponsor a reception for our members = during the=20 meeting. So if you are at the meeting make sure to stop by the MAS = booth=20 to say "hi" and get your ticket for the reception. I would like to = encourage MAS members to attend the MAS business meeting that will = be held=20 during M&M'97 (Wed., Aug. 13, 5 p.m., Rm. R208, Convention = Center).=20 These meetings are an important way for you , the society members, = to have=20 your voices heard.=20

During this year's business meeting we have = some=20 important issues to discuss and vote on. I think that one of the = most=20 important pieces of business is the nominations of candidates for = the=20 upcoming elections. Please make suggestions for nominations to = members of=20 the nominating committee before the election. We are always = looking for=20 members to become more actively involved in the society. Another = issue is=20 a change to the MAS bylaws. Changes to the bylaws require a vote = by the=20 membership at the annual meeting. Council is recommending that = changes be=20 made in Article III section 4 of the bylaws. Presently, the bylaws =

EDITOR'S NOTE

This MicroNews is a bit more concise than = previous=20 issues, thanks mostly to the one-page schedule for the M&M'97 = meeting.=20 You can get more meeting information at = http://www.msa.microscopy.com/.=20

Please be sure to let me know if you have = information to=20 include in future issues of MicroNews including changes in the = contacts=20 for the Affiliated Regional Societies and the Sustaining Members. = Also,=20 let me know as soon as you have a date, place, and contact for = your local=20 meeting. Hope to see many of you in Cleveland.=20

Microscopy and Microanalysis 1997=20

Final Program Summary

On the next page is a schedule of the final = scientific=20 program for Microscopy and Microanalysis 1997. Please take a few = minutes=20 to scan this summary. You will find that topics of interest to you = and MAS=20 members in general are a major part of this year's program. This = is due to=20 the effort of many of our members who, as session chairpersons, = planned=20 the topics and recruited invited and contributed speakers. They = have made=20 my job easier, and made sure that the interests of our membership = are met=20 in this meeting. Now its your turn to do your part! Make you plans = to=20 attend the meeting this week!=20

Now that the details are settled, let me call = your=20 attention to some very special events. On Monday afternoon, we = will have=20 the Life on Mars? The Role of Microanalysis session. In = this=20 presentation, scientists from both sides of this debate will give = us the=20 latest information and review the evidence on this fascinating = subject.=20

This year, we will have an extraordinary joint = MAS/MSA=20 Presidential Events session, that extends over two days. The = first=20 session follows up on the Life on Mars? symposium with a = keynote=20 address by Apollo 15 Astronaut, Al Wordin. Ask anyone who attended = our=20 last encounter with an Astronaut at MAS 1995; this is one session = you=20 don't want to miss! The Presidential Happenings concludes = on=20 Tuesday, with a presentation by Andy White of Industrial Light and = Magic.=20 With 3-D Visualization of data becoming so important in the = presentation=20 of microscopy results, perhaps we can all gain some inspiration = from the=20

visualization of the mighty "Thunder Lizard", = the T-REX.=20

The rest of the program contains lots of = excellent=20 science for everyone of us. Please plan to join us in Cleveland = August=20 10-14, you will not be disappointed!=20

Jon J. McCarthy

Nominations

As I wrote in the last issue of MicroNews, as=20 president-elect I am chairman of the MAS nominations committee = this year.=20 Other members of the committee are the two new directors, Cathy = Johnson=20 and Don Parker as well as Paul Hlava. One more member, Scott = Walck, has=20 been appointed to the committee which will present nominations for = the=20 fall 1997 election at the MAS Business Meeting which will be held = during=20 the M&M'97 Meeting in Cleveland (Wed., 5 p.m., Rm. R208, = Convention=20 Center).=20

In the last MicroNews issue I asked for = opinions from the=20 membership regarding the number of nominations for Executive = Council=20 positions. The by-laws require only one nomination to those = positions=20 while some members suggested that two nominations should be made. = I want=20 you to know that I received no response on this subject from MAS = members,=20 so I can only assume that it does not matter to the majority of = the MAS=20 membership how many nominations are put forth by the committee. I = would=20 like to remind you that additional nominations for all positions = can be=20 made at the business meeting.=20
